SUMMARY:

Due to extensive studies to substitute fossil fuels, there is an increased interest in biofuels nowadays. In Europe, there is a rising interest in advanced fuels, which are produced from sources different from oil seeds and food crops. Farnesane is a compound produced by an engineered microbial system using advanced technology with modified microorganisms. Fermentation produces a product from the terpene amily called Farnesene, subsequently, it is hydrogenated, forming an iso-paraffin called Farnesane. As a state-of-the-art fuel, it is an interesting biofuel with favorable physicochemical characteristics and can be used in diesel engines and aircraft turbines. As a ground vehicle fuel, Farnesane presented characteristics similar to those of mineral diesel, with similar results for emissions and engine performance. As a jet fuel, Farnesane showed anti-freezing characteristics, high kinematic viscosity at temperatures under 0 °C, and low particulate matter emissions. In this paper, physicochemical characteristics such as distillation curves, heating value, and density are investigated, all of them for Farnesane, mineral diesel (S50), and kerosene. Highlight that in the current literature there is no information about Farnesane properties, and the results of the present study show that it has a high lower heating value (LHV), and its distillation curve behavior is interesting when compared with the curves of mineral diesel and kerosene. Another interesting point to highlight is that the distillation graphic of Farnesane is located between the diesel and kerosene curves in most stages of the distillate volume, which may suggest the versatility of this fuel. In conclusion, comparing the properties of Farnesane with those of both fossil fuels demonstrates that Farnesane is a versatile fuel that is feasible for the applications mentioned previously.
