SUMMARY:

The use of ore tailings would minimize the large volume currently directed to the dams, alleviating the difficulties of disposal and processing of dewatering, and stacking and in some cases, even making them unnecessary. Among these processes is the processing of ores that contain niobium, Brazil has the largest world reserves of niobium. Normally, the deposits in operation have as primary ore, which is the sound rock, which contains carbonates, phlogopite, magnetite and apatite, usually rich in pyrochlore. In the deposit the highest concentrations are found in the central part of it. The average concentration of niobium in the
primary ore is 1.5% Nb2O5, with maximum levels of 8%. Niobium minerals are commonly found in apatite beneficiation processes and, due to their extremely thin diameter, they are directed to the tailings that are disposed in dams. Therefore, the main objective of this work is to evaluate part of the tailing’s flows generated in the apatite processing, the tailings from the cleaner stage of barite flotation and the recleaner tailings from the apatite flotation process, in composition with the current material fed. in the niobium flotation concentration plant. For this, samples were collected in these flows and bench flotation tests were performed to compare the current situation and the composition of the tailings. The compositions showed a gain of metallurgical recovery of 9% and mass recovery of 6.6% and mainly the maintenance of the quality indices. After analyzing the compositions, Central Composite Design, Generalized Reduced Gradient and Normal Boundary Intersection response surfaces were used as an optimization algorithm for the main variables of the niobium flotation process.
