SUMMARY:

Acrylonitrile (ACN) is one of the most used monomers in the chemical industry, being used in
the synthesis of plastics, rubbers and acrylic fibers, for example. However, it is also classified
as a highly toxic volatile organic compound (VOC). ACN is present in the exhaust gases of its
own production process. These gases, therefore, require adequate treatment. In this context,
selective catalytic combustion (CCS) emerges as a highly promising technology for the removal
of ACN in industrial gaseous effluents. This method consists of using catalysts, aiming at
reducing the temperatures required for the reaction and controlling the formation of unwanted
by-products, especially nitrogen oxides (NOx). Thus, this study aimed to study catalysts based
on BETA zeolite, modified with copper and cerium (CuCeOx-HBETA), in the reaction of
acrylonitrile SCC. These were prepared by wet impregnation and characterized by DRX and
FTIR techniques. XRD results showed that copper and/or cerium oxides are present in the
catalysts as nanoparticles. CeO2 presented nanocrystal sizes (5.7-8.0 nm) smaller than CuO
nanocrystals (~20 nm). By the FTIR analyses, a great similarity was noticed between the spectra
of the CuCeOx-HBETA catalysts and that of HBETA, indicating that its structure was
preserved after the process of wet impregnation and thermal treatment. Finally, the catalytic
tests revealed that the CuCeOx-HBETA catalysts reached high conversions between 300-

350°C, with the highest activity attributed to the presence of CuO and CeO2 oxides. 10Cu10Ce-
HBETA was the most active, suggesting that the interaction between Cu and Ce species, in the

proportion used, can effectively contribute to the improvement of acrylonitrile conversion. In
addition, the catalysts showed good selectivity in relation to the formation of N2, since the
formation of NOx was insignificant.
