SUMMARY:

Charcoal and alumina are compounds largely used in industry, from adsorbents to catalysts, and can be used separete or together with other compounds and molecules. Searching for combine the two materials adsorbent capacities was proposed the impregnation whith alumina (Al 2 O 3 ) by sol-gel process in a carbonaceous matrix to increase the removal of organic contaminants in the aqueous phase in synthetic organic effluents compared to isolated compounds. The methodology initiate by to produce two different types of adsorbents: based on the charcoaling of Elephant Grass and Eucalyptus. The treatiment of both was produced with a colloidal solution containing aluminum Tri-sec-butoxide (C 12 H 27 AlO 3 ), it was gelled with water vapor and then calcined, obtaining charcoal/alumina as final product. The adsorbents were characterized by the presence of crystalline phases (X-Ray Diffractometry), morphology (Scanning Electron Microscopy), specific surface area and porosity (multipoint method) and thermal stability (Thermogravimetry). In relation to the initial coals in both samples was possible to identify the alumina in its boehmite and χ-alumina forms, the increase of specific area, 14.42% and 8.97%, and porosity, 17.03%, 9.39%, in the samples of Elephant grass and Eucalyptus grass, respectively, as well as a range of thermal stability that in both samples approached 500°C, in addition to this the presence of alumina and its dispersion over a large part of the surface of the samples inside pores was present in the microscopy analyses. The production and impregnation process proved to be effective and now is necessary to verify its use as an adsorbent. After this first stage of preparation and characterization of the adsorbent will be done the Zero Load Potential and the adsorbent test stages with synthetic effluents containing organic. Finaly new analisys will be carried out such as Infrared Spectroscopy to properly understand the behavior of the adsorbent.
