STYLISTIC ANALYSIS OF 6 SOLO GUITAR COMPOSITIONS of CHIQUITO BRAGA

Francisco de Andrade Braga, also known as Chiquito Braga (1936 –2017), wasan influential musician in Belo Horizonte’smusic scene of the 1950’s and 1960’s and a sought-after arranger, guitarist and studio musician on the national scene in the following decades. Chiquito developed a particular way of playing chords and melodies with the guitar, which he called Escola Mineira de Violão Moderno, directly influencing musicians such as Toninho Horta. The present work is based on the investigation of the compositional style of Chiquito Braga for solo guitar in the pieces Prado, Denise 10, Prelúdio dos Ovnis,Canção de Iemanjá,O Portal and Prelúdio and Dança de Oxum. The research is justified by the need to shed light on this face of Chiquito Braga, whose records forsolo guitar began in the 1990’s. Take part, through surveys about his life and work. In the next step, we will present the analyticalmethod developed by White (1976) and our adaptation of it for the structuralization of the rhythmic, harmonic and melodic elements of the analyses, as well as a brief report on the transcriptional process used to make the scores used in this research. We will analyze in sequence the 6 pieces, organized by the structure pointed out in the previous step, using in our observations musical concepts developed by Schoenberg (2002), Koellreutter (2018) and Almada (2012) in order to identify elements that we can consider to be characteristic of Chiquito Braga's style. in his compositions for guitar
