SUMMARY:
ABSTRACT
Introduction: Self-medication is a common behavior among university students, which
represents the principle of the person spontaneously selecting and using a medication that they
consider appropriate to solve a health problem. Studies have reported this behavior between
20% and 88%, which may vary according to the students' country of origin, beliefs,
undergraduate course and recall period for self-medication measures. Previous studies indicate
that self-medication is common among university students, factors such as geographic location,
limited access to health services and the influence of the population's habits, show a great
tendency for this practice to increase. However, there is a dearth of research into the beliefs,
knowledge, attitudes and practices related to this behavior, especially in terms of identification.
This is due to the fact that most existing research only addresses the prevalence of self
medication. Therefore, it is necessary to carry out a study focused on understanding this
behavior. For this, a validated instrument will be used following the KAP model (Knowledge,
Attitudes and Practices), widely used internationally to assess specific health issues. However,
it is important to note that the discussion about behavior in relation to the KAP model is still
insipid. Objective: Investigate the knowledge, attitudes and practices of university students
regarding self-medication. Methods: This will be a cross-sectional study. Students from a
public university in Minas Gerais, regularly enrolled and attending one of the four
undergraduate courses in the health area (Biochemistry, Nursing, Pharmacy or Medicine) will
be included and those who incorrectly complete the data collection instrument will be excluded.
The sample size will consist of 181 participants. For data collection, a validated instrument
entitled “Knowledge, attitude and practices of self-medication in university students” will be
used. Collection will take place online for students. This instrument presents adequate content
validity (CVI=0.97) and reliability (α=0.88). The collected data will be entered into an
electronic spreadsheet (Excel Software, 2010). Inferential analysis will be carried out to analyze
the data. The significance level adopted will be 5%. This project was approved by the Research
Ethics Committee (CEP) of the Federal University of São João Del Rei – Campus Centro Oeste
(UFSJ-CCO), opinion no. 4,752,214 and is in accordance with the Resolution of the National
Health Council - 466/12 of Brazil
