SUMMARY:
ABSTRACT
Introduction: Hospital malnutrition is diagnosed in the hospital, either on admission or
during hospitalization. The prevalence of hospital malnutrition in Brazil is about 7,5% to
45,6%. Among all age groups, malnutrition in children and adolescents is considered a serious
problem of public health. The most common causes of hospital malnutrition in most
hospitalized children are associated with an underlying health condition; reduced absorption
of macro and/or micronutrients; increased losses and altered demands; increased energy
expenditure, procedures that require fasting, and, time to achieve the full diet. During
childhood and adolescence, periods which are characterized by fast growth and physical and
intellectual development, these being particularly vulnerable to external factors, the
nutritional status influences well-being, leading to important changes in quality of life.
Nutritional therapy (NT) can help improve the health results of hospitalized patients with
uniform definitions and nutritional support prioritization as part of the care.
Objective: Understand parents’ or guardians’ perception of nutrition therapy used in
hospitalized children and adolescents supported by a Multidisciplinary Nutritional Therapy
Team (MNTT). Method: This is a qualitative study based on the phenomenology of Martin
Heidegger, using the semi-structured interview as a data collection technique. The final
sample was 14 respondents. The study respondents were family members of children and
adolescents who were hospitalized and accompanied by the MNTT in a hospital in
Divinópolis/MG. Partial results: the data collection analysis was performed by the
comprehensive analysis technique. 25 thematic axes emerged, of which 3 were selected
because they best answered our research question: 1- understanding about the contributions of
NT, 2- feelings related to NT, 3- difficulties and facilities in NT. Through these axes, it is
expected to structure the discussion and understanding of the phenomenon.
