SUMMARY:

This work deals with maternal overload in parental relationships. Our aim is to discuss how an asymmetry in the parental relationship is naturalized, leading to a social representation of the mother as the main person responsible for raising the children, which places the woman-mother as a central figure in this relationship, generating an overload. To this end, we will use qualitative research, based on Critical Discourse Analysis, under the proposal of the Social Theory of Discourse (FAIRCLOUGH, 1992) allied to the Dialectic-relational methodology, which provides for the pointing out of a social wrong (cf. Fairclough, 2009). Given the transdisciplinary nature of the subject, we associated this theory with the gender studies proposed by Badinter (1985), Del Priore (2004), Tiburi (2018), Iaconelli (2023) and Federici (2021). For the analysis, the corpus was Law 14.457/2022, entitled “Emprega+Mulheres Program”, and the headlines that reflected its enactment during the election period. The law in question is aimed at women, however, it includes measures involving parenthood, in other words, the oddity lies in the use of the lexicon parenthood in an initiative that is said to be aimed at women. Our interest, therefore, lies in the movement of this lexicon in legal discourse. We will then try to understand how the legal discourse uses parenthood and how this mobilization relates to the representation of the overburdened figure of the woman-mother. The results show that the representation of the woman-mother as being primarily responsible for childcare, marked by a hegemonically masculine society, is constructed and reaffirmed in social practices, acting through discursive practices in such a way as to naturalize the asymmetry existing in the parental relationship, and, in addition to the gender issues, ideological intersections linked to neoliberal logic were identified in this process, leading to broader reflections.
