SUMMARY:

Lauded as the most famous fictional detective in literature, the stories of Sherlock Holmes, written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, have left their mark in the collective imagination, as it can be observed in the numerous adaptations which were and are still produced and released nowadays. One of these adaptations is the manga Moriarty: the Patriot, published in Japan from 2016 to 2023, written by Takeuchi Ryosuke and illustrated by Miyoshi Hikaru, later adapted to anime between October 2020 and June 2021. This dissertation aims to analyze how Moriarty: the Patriot reinvents the character professor Moriarty and transforms his importance in Holmes’ stories. This research supports itself upon three theoretical pillars: intermediality, based on the model for media analysis proposed by Elleström (2021); adaptation, following the ideas of Hutcheon (2013), Bortolotti and Hutcheon (2020) and Newell (2017); and characterization, using notions by Forster (1927) and Margolin (1983) combined with Elleström (2021), in addition to notions of image analysis in relation to angle, distance (Kress; van Leeuwen, 2021) and positioning (Bang, 2000). By comparing Moriarty in the original stories and in the adaptation, we can firstly state that the new version of the professor can be understood as a round character and that his new appearance reflects his personality. When contrasting the plot of the studied works, it is noticeable that the anime and manga Moriarty: the Patriot can be considered an adaptation according to the theoretical scope defined as basis for this research. Additionally, we understand that there is a cultural dialogue in three instances: a) in the usage of the colors red and blue for Moriarty and Sherlock Holmes in the adaptation, which reflects not only the opposition between the two, but also western and eastern cultural values; b) in the representation of Victorian values in Moriarty, which we also understand to be symbolized by the color red; c) in the way that the plot is changed as a consequence of the adaptation process, which seeks to maintain the consistent theme of “rich versus poor” and also adapt the plot of the sherlockian canon to a new medium and a new audience. All these transformations establish professor Moriarty as Sherlock Holmes’ greatest rival.
